sUAS History and the sUAS rule was a recommendation given from the RTCA SC203 UAS subcommittee in April 2008.  This rule was to cover UAS under 55 pounds.  As a result of this request from the stakeholder community the FAA stood up the sUAS Advisory Rule making Committee (ARC).  The sUAS ARC was comprised of aviation and UAS stakeholders who produced a recommendation and submitted it to the FAA on April 1, 2009.  At that time the industry anticipated that it would take 18 months for a rule to come out.    On February 15, 2015 the FAA published the next step called a Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) for public comment for sUAS rule 107.  The public comment period ended on April 24, 2015.  The sUAS NPRM resulted in over 4500 comments which was far less than the industry expected.  The new date for the rule to be published is July 14, 2016.  The industry has been promised this multiple time and has been waiting a long time for its release.     Only time will tell….
